Bridge Repairs

The county council are proposing to strengthen and repair the Wistow bridge next year.

Wistow Bridge is a three span bridge with four different construction types. The original brick/stone arch is Listed Scheduled Ancient Monument, however the two outer arches are now a reinforced concrete and stonework construction. A reinforced parapet beam has been added to the north and a beam and reinforced concrete slab to the south.

It is clear, when considering the defects to Wistow Bridge that the majority of the structural elements are in need of repair, either due to overloading, poor workmanship, water ingress or general deterioration.

The County Council therefore proposes to carry out the necessary strengthening repairs to increase the bridge’s lifespan and safeguard the Scheduled Ancient Monument section of the structure.

Planned Work

Tree and vegetation clearing works are due to begin in late January/early February so to avoid the nesting season and delaying the scheme unnecessarily.

The main works to be carried out will be to remove and replace existing northern parapet beam and parapet. The parapet shall be replaced with a brick/stonework section that matches the brick/stonework of the existing Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is also proposed that the concrete to the southern side of the structure be repaired and replaced (where needed) and a new, steel parapet installed.

The County Council shall also be carrying out minor traffic calming works to the bridge and its approaches, including textureflex marking strips, road narrowing to allow single access across the bridge, a solar/wind powered speed reduction sign and improving site lines for vehicle users.

The works are forecast to last no longer than 4 months and it is hoped that a single lane can be kept open for traffic during the length of the works so to maintain access to the village. During certain periods of construction it may be necessary to close the road completely, but this would only be for a short amount of time.
